The first thing new drivers should do is read the North Dakota Class D Drivers License Manual. This is the key resource for state road laws, and you should spend some time studying it before you go to take the test.
Test Structure
The North Dakota written exam addresses the rules of the road, examples of road signs and what they mean and general knowledge of driving skills. There are 25 multiple choice and true/false questions, each with 3 or 4 answer choices. You won't need an appointment to take the written exam; simply stop into your local Motor Vehicle office with the necessary documentation.
Important Sections of the Manual
You should read all sections of the manual once before going in to take the exam because each section will help you better understand the licensing process. However, when it comes to taking the test itself, not all sections of the manual are created equal. Here are the parts you should pay most attention to:
Signs, Signals and Road Markings, (pages 8-16) There will be questions on the written test asking you to identify the meaning of certain road signs by shape and color.
Rules of the Road, starting on page 16, details the nuts and bolts of North Dakota driving laws such as the rules for right-of-way, turns, speed, passing, freeway driving and parking.
Driving Skills and Emergency Situations, starting on page 25, provides important strategies for driving in a variety of conditions, such as adverse weather, and sharing the road with other users.
Expect several questions concerning the rules and consequences for drinking and driving, found in the section Drinking, Drugs and Driving starting on page 34.
