Delaware Permit Study Guide

Going to the DMV to take the permit test in Delaware does not have to be intimidating.  Use this study guide, and take the permit practice test to help make the process easy.

In order to receive a learner’s permit in Delaware applicants must pass a written exam, which asks a series of questions regarding road rules, traffic signs and signal identification.  You can make the written test a breeze by studying beforehand. The Delaware Drivers Manual is an official publication that will tell you everything you need to know in order to pass the written test.  Studying the manual will be a great help in passing the written test.

Structure of Written Test

The written test is divided into two specific parts, the rules of the road section, and questions about road signs and traffic signals.  The test contains 30 multiple choice questions, each with three answer choices from which to pick the best answer. Drivers must get at least 24 questions right, or 80%, to pass and receive a permit.  If fewer than 24 questions are answered correctly, the test can be retaken after 10 days until successfully completed.  All questions are taken directly from the Delaware Driver Manual.

What to Study

Applicants would do well to read the entire Delaware Driver Manual before taking their permit test.  However there are certain sections of the manual that are most relevant to the permit test.  Take extra time with these parts of the manual that deal with the actual driving laws and situations.

  • The first thing for new drivers to know are the specifics of the Graduated Driver License program and the learner’s permit, described on pages 24-26.  Make sure you understand the rules and restrictions for the permit and operators license.
  • All drivers should be familiar with the rules and consequences of driving while impaired by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or other distractions.  Study pages 47-57 for important information on alcohol and driving, especially the laws pertaining to underage drinking and driving on page 52.
  • Section Four - Rules of the Road is probably the most important chapter to study.  It covers the nuts and bolts of state traffic laws, that new drivers are expected to follow.  Pay special attention to the road signals and signs illustrated in this section, especially on pages 67-76.  An entire section of the test is devoted to recognizing highway signs and signals, and you should be able to identify the meaning of signs by their shape and color.
  • Section Five – Driving Skills and Safety Tips is also important and will be quizzed on the test.  This chapter provides strategic approaches to various aspects of driving, such as how to best utilize basic driving maneuvers, defensive driving, sharing the road and what to do in a variety of adverse situations.

While the manual is the most important resource for learning the detail of driving in Delaware, you can also quiz your knowledge with the Delaware permit practice test.  The practice test is designed to not only provide clues to the content of the permit test, but it will also give test takers a feeling for how the test is structured.
